Your Ongoing Care

What happens after your first prescription?

At Naturecan Clinic, new medical cannabis patients in the UK typically have an initial consultation in Month 1, a follow-up in Month 2, and then move to shared care with quarterly doctor reviews and repeat prescriptions in between.
Getting your prescription is just the beginning. We're here for the long term! Our care pathway is designed to give you the right level of clinical support at every stage, while making ongoing access to your medication clear and as consistent as possible.

~95% Eligible for Shared Care

Year 1: Getting Established

Month 1 — Initial Consultation: Your first video consultation with a specialist doctor. They'll assess your condition, review your medical history, and, if appropriate, create your treatment plan.
Month 2 — Follow-up Consultation: A second consultation to assess how you're responding. Your doctor will review whether the approach is right for you and may adjust your treatment parameters. If you're stable and the doctor is satisfied, they can approve you for shared care.

What Is Shared Care?

Shared care is how most established medical cannabis patients in the UK manage their ongoing care. It means you move from monthly doctor consultations to repeat prescriptions reviewed by a prescribing pharmacist or nurse that is governed by the specialist doctor, with a doctor follow-up every three months.

Year 2 and Beyond

If you remain stable, your care becomes even simpler. In Year 2 you'll have one annual consultation with your doctor and repeat prescriptions for the remaining months, each reviewed by a prescribing pharmacist or nurse before being issued. The doctor continues to have oversight of your care and can request to see you at any time. At the stage of each repeat prescription, we will ask you to fill out a short questionnaire on your symptoms — are they improving or changing? This will help the clinical team review the effectiveness of your treatment and determine if your repeat prescription is still appropriate.
This means consistent, uninterrupted access to your medication.

When Would I Need to See My Doctor Again?

Your doctor will always be available if you need them. You'll be asked to book a doctor consultation if:
  • You'd like to change your product format
  • Your condition worsens or changes
  • Your clinician decides to review your shared care status at a follow-up
  • You've had a gap of a few months or more since your last prescription

Why Might I Not Be Eligible for Shared Care?

Not all patients will be moved to shared care. Your doctor may recommend continued direct oversight if you have a more complex medical history, if there are concerns about how you're responding, or if your condition requires closer monitoring. This decision is always made by your clinician in your best interest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about getting started

What medical records do I need to get started?

+
You'll need your Summary Care Record (SCR), which contains your medical history, current medications, and past treatments. You can request this from your GP receptionist — it's usually available within a few days. Alternatively, you can give us permission to request it on your behalf.

How quickly can I see a specialist?

+
The speed depends on how quickly you can provide your medical records. Once we have your Summary Care Record, most patients can book a medical cannabis consultation within a few days.

What happens if I'm not eligible?

+
If our doctors determine that medical cannabis isn't appropriate for your situation, you'll receive a full refund — provided the information you gave us was accurate and truthful.

What is a Summary Care Record?

+
A Summary Care Record, or SCR, is an electronic record of your important medical information. It includes details like diagnoses, treatments, allergies, and more. To find out more, check our page — What is a Summary Care Record and why we need it.

What happens during the video consultation?

+
You'll have a private video call with a GMC-registered specialist doctor. They'll review your medical history, discuss your condition and symptoms, and — if they consider it appropriate — outline a treatment plan. You can ask questions throughout.

What is shared care and when do I become eligible?

+
Shared care means your repeat prescriptions are reviewed by a prescribing pharmacist or nurse rather than requiring a doctor consultation each time. Most patients become eligible after their Month 2 follow-up, provided their doctor is satisfied they're stable on their treatment.

How often will I need a consultation?

+
In Year 1, you'll have an initial consultation, a Month 2 follow-up, and quarterly follow-ups after that. In Year 2 and beyond, stable patients typically need just one annual consultation with a doctor, plus repeat prescriptions reviewed by a pharmacist or nurse.

What if I want to change my treatment?

+
If you'd like to change your product format or your condition changes, we'll ask you to book a follow-up consultation with your doctor. Your clinician will review your treatment parameters and adjust your care plan accordingly.

I'm already with another clinic — how do I transfer?

+
Complete our eligibility questionnaire, upload your Summary Care Record and a discharge letter from your current clinic, and book your free transfer consultation. Our patient care team can help with the paperwork.

Can I drive while prescribed medical cannabis?

+
Patients prescribed medical cannabis can legally drive in the UK, provided they are not impaired. It is your responsibility to assess whether you are fit to drive. Your doctor will discuss this with you during your consultation.
