How to Get Your
Summary Care
Record —

A Summary Care Record (SCR) is an electronic summary of your key medical information held by your GP. It includes your current medications, allergies, adverse reactions, diagnoses, and past treatments. Over 56 million patients in England have one, and around 98% of GP practices contribute to the system.

Why Naturecan Clinic Needs Your Summary Care Record

When you apply to be assessed at Naturecan Clinic, your clinical team needs to verify several things from your documented medical history.
Your SCR is the quickest and most reliable way to evidence these. The key checks include confirming that medical cannabis is not clinically contraindicated for you, that your condition is documented, and that you have evidence of prior treatments that did not provide adequate relief.

It gives our doctors a verified clinical record rather than relying on memory or self-reporting.
Your SCR is maintained by NHS England and updated every time your GP adds new information to your file — any recent doctor visits or prescriptions will be visible.
You are legally entitled to request your Summary Care Record at any time, and you do not need to give a reason. Under the UK Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR, your GP must provide a copy of your medical records free of charge within 30 days of your request.
1
A confirmed diagnosis
For the condition you are seeking treatment for, such as chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, or a sleep disorder.
2
Evidence of at least two previous treatments
For that condition. This is a standard eligibility requirement across UK medical cannabis clinics and ensures that cannabis-based treatment is being considered as a specialist option, not a first-line choice. If you have seen a private physio or therapist, you may need documentation from them too.
What counts as a previous treatment?
  • check_circle
Prescription medications (including those you stopped due to side effects)
  • check_circle
Over-the-counter medications used regularly for the condition
  • check_circle
    Physiotherapy, osteopathy, or chiropractic treatment
  • check_circle
CBT, counselling, talking therapies, or psychiatric treatment
  • check_circle
Acupuncture, TENS therapy, or other pain management interventions
  • check_circle
Even treatments you were offered but declined may still count. Our team can advise.
If you are not sure whether your history meets the threshold, do not let that stop you from applying — our patient care team will be happy to review your situation before you pay for a consultation. If you are not eligible, you will receive a full refund.

What If Your Treatment or Diagnosis Was Private?

Private consultations, specialist appointments, and therapy sessions are not always recorded on your NHS Summary Care Record. If any part of your care happened privately — whether that is a diagnosis, a course of physiotherapy, or a referral to a psychiatrist — you will need to contact that clinic or practitioner separately and request copies of their letters, reports, or discharge summaries. You can then upload these alongside your SCR. Our doctors will review all documents together to build a complete picture of your treatment history.

If you or someone else is in danger, or you are experiencing a mental health crisis — do not use this complaints form.

Patients experiencing severe deterioration in mental health, thoughts of self-harm, acute psychiatric symptoms, or severe side effects should seek urgent medical support immediately. The complaints and feedback process is not the right pathway for urgent or emergency situations.

If your concern is not urgent — for example, a question about your prescription, an experience during a consultation, or a process issue — please continue to the feedback and complaints section below. All complaints are handled confidentially and will not affect your care.

Ask our team →
  • What is included in a Summary Care Record?add
A Summary Care Record typically includes your current medications, allergies, adverse reactions to medicines, diagnoses, and past treatments. An enriched SCR may also include significant medical history, communication preferences, and end-of-life care information. For a medical cannabis consultation, we primarily need your medications, diagnoses, and treatments tried.
  • Is a Summary Care Record the same as my full medical records?add
No. Your full medical records contain your complete GP history — every single appointment, test result, and clinical note. A Summary Care Record is a shorter electronic summary of the most important information. For most medical cannabis consultations, an SCR is sufficient. In some cases, our doctors may request additional records.
  • Can I see my Summary Care Record on the NHS App?add
Yes, in most cases. If your GP practice uploads records to the NHS system, you can view your health record directly in the NHS App under "Health record." However, not all practices have fully digitalised their records, so the information available may vary. If the app shows limited data, contact your GP directly.
  • Do I have to pay for my medical records?add
No. Under the UK Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR, your GP must provide a copy of your medical records free of charge. If your GP practice asks for a fee, you can politely remind them of their obligations under the law.
  • Can my GP refuse to give me my records?add
In almost all cases, no. You have a legal right to access your medical records. A GP can only withhold records in very limited circumstances — for example, if releasing the information could cause serious harm to you or someone else. This is extremely rare. If you experience difficulty, please reach out — our team is here to help.
  • How many treatments do I need to have tried for medical cannabis?add
You will typically need to have tried at least two previous treatments for your condition. These can include prescription medications, over-the-counter treatments, physiotherapy, talking therapies, or other interventions. Treatments you were offered but declined may also count. If you are unsure whether you meet this threshold, our patient care team can review your situation before you book a consultation.
  • What if my records show treatment from a private clinic?add
Private treatments are not always recorded on your NHS Summary Care Record. If any part of your care happened privately, contact that provider and request copies of their clinical letters or reports. You can upload these alongside your SCR and our doctors will review everything together.
  • Can I get medical cannabis without providing medical records?add
No. UK regulations require doctors to review your clinical history before prescribing a controlled substance. Your Summary Care Record is the standard way to evidence your diagnosis and prior treatments. Without it, a doctor cannot safely or legally prescribe.
  • I live in Scotland. Do I have a Summary Care Record?add
Scotland uses a different system called the Emergency Care Summary (ECS). The process for requesting your records from your GP is the same — contact your practice directly or use the NHS Scotland app. Our team can guide you through the specific steps.
  • How long does it take to get my records?add
Via the NHS App, you can access your records in minutes. If you email or phone your GP, most practices respond within 5 to 10 working days. Your GP is legally required to provide your records within 30 days.
